Masterton Youth Council

So, what is the Youth Council….
The Youth Council is a group of Youth who meet fortnightly and talk about Youth related topics. These discussions will let the Masterton District Council and ‘The Spot’ (The Youth Centre) know what Youth want to happen in this area. These topics could be around things to do, places to go, employment opportunities, training programmes, and anything else you would like to talk about that relates to Masterton and Youth. The Youth Council meets at “The Spot”.

So, who goes to these meetings?
Anyone aged 12-24 can apply. We only have 10-12 spots, so be in quick. We want people representing the different viewpoints and backgrounds of Masterton’s youth, who have an interest in Masterton and Youth topics. If you can make meetings every two weeks on a Monday or Tuesday evening, then apply! The Youth Centre Co-ordinator will be there, and we will have a District Counsellor there sometimes. We can also get in people to give us more information on different topics if necessary and to help us with writing convincing submissions to the District Council.

Will I have to talk in front of the Council?
Only if you want to… There will be the opportunity to present ideas to the Council, but if that’s not your thing, that’s cool.

Will the Council listen to us?
The Council will hear what we have to say, but does not have to take on recommendations. However we will work on how to present information to the District Council in a convincing way. The fact that we will be presenting as a group will help.

Do I have to be really good at School to apply?
No. We are looking for a wide range of people. What we really want are people who will come to meetings and can talk about youth related topics.

Plus! There will be Pizza at the meetings….
