Featherston Community Centre Newsletter September 2011
07/09/11 15:40
Greetings from the Featherston Community Centre!
Click here for the September Timetable
Busy Times…ongoing…
Again, another very busy month and the battle against the leaks (and no its not a Welsh thing) goes on but I do believe I am winning).
Its been great to see those who have persevered with the majority of our regular classes maintaining numbers and some even improving (Firstly our Monday night “Awareness raising videos” had 17 participants a week or so ago and now May Brown’s Needlework group is beating them with I think 18 last Friday) GO NEEDLE WORK GROUP!!! Woohoo!!
Interesting visitors to the Community Centre
It seems to be my month (or 6 weeks at least) of getting the opportunity to sit down with a coffee (and sometimes even a chocky bickie) and talk about what makes a difference for people.
A month or so ago I had a surprise visit from the right honourable member of parliament John Hayes, MP for Wairarapa. This turned out to be a very relaxed and candid opportunity to get to know “the man behind the label”.
Also, this month I got to meet our Mayor, Her worship Adrienne Staples. I was inspired to hear that Adrienne felt we [the Featherston Community Centre] were doing well and discussing what maybe we can improve upon. I greatly appreciated both of these very busy people taking time out of their day to share their vision with us. Thank you !
Then, at the invitation of Jane Mills (South Wairarapa Safer community council), I got to spend an hour with two first year Medical Students from Otago University’s Medical School. They are starting out on their journey to becoming medical professionals (MD’s in fact) and asked me to share my vision on the role our community centre plays in creating and maintaining health – ranging from Rupert’s Feldenkrais and Keiko’s Tai Chi classes right through to the folks that come to the centre to talk because it’s a place they feel safe in…
These all gave me an opportunity to look at our Community Centre’s role in the community through different eyes. Again thank you to you all for this opportunity.
Murray Clarkson, Centre Manager

Thursday 27 October 7.30pm: There’s a Referendum taking place at the same time as the 2011 General Election on 26th November. The Referendum gives you the chance to have your say on the voting system we use to elect our Parliaments in the future. It builds on the electoral referendum process that began back in 1992 and 1993 when New Zealanders chose the MMP voting system. Holding the Referendum at the same time as the General Election makes it easy for you to take part. But what is it all about – what are the options – what do they mean?
Come and hear the Electoral Commission give us a clear understanding about each of the options so we can use our votes to give us what we want in our Parliament for the future.
No party politics just clear explanations and questions answered. Supported by Wairarapa REAP & Featherston Community Centre.
But before we finish off…A poor indictment…
Perhaps some may feel that this might not be the appropriate forum, however as a voice of many in the community I find it not just sad but extremely distasteful that we have an element in our community who feel the need to steal from an organisation which so readily gives to all who need advice, support and even shelter. Last month, as some of you will be aware, our garage was broken into, violently causing damage and personal property stolen.
During the first hill closure someone felt it necessary to steal one of our “free tea and coffee and shelter” signs offering the same to stranded visitors. Then a couple of weeks ago another individual felt they needed our data projector far more than we did on the night of our second speakers corner.
We’d love to have these items back please!

Healthcare in Tararua Enhanced
07/09/11 15:39
Health Services focussed on Tararua people have been increased and improved by the Central PHO with the development of two “home base” sites opening on 5 September to provide health care where and when it is needed.
At a Central PHO Board meeting held in Pahiatua recently, the board affirmed its commitment to developing primary health care services in the Tararua District, says PHO Board Chairman Colin McJannett.
The home base sites of the PHO will be located at Te Kete Hauora, Main Street, Dannevirke, and the St John Hall, Tui Street Pahiatua.
The changes reflect ongoing evolution of health services across the district and overall they continue to increase local capacity as the MidCentral District Health Board invests heavily in primary and community services.
The PHO Community Nurses are moving from specialist roles into a broader role called Community Clinical Nurses. This is in line with a general trend across the country, and is designed to get better continuity of care for the patient. If a patient has Diabetes, , Respiratory and/or Cardiovascular Disease, it is not sensible for them to be seen by three different specialist Nurses one after another. Community Clinical Nurses will continue to be specialised in one area, but must be competent across all of Primary Health Care.
A new specialist Older Persons team has also been established to work with General Practice teams and other community based providers to improve the health of older people. This new team has been established within Tararua Health Group and is comprised of nursing and general practitioner care, as well as piloting the new InterRAI assessment programme for the MidCentral region.
“We are doing some minor fine tuning in line with work across the rest of Central PHO that means services have increased where there is more demand, and reduced where there is less or no demand. Overall this means an increase in services focused on Tararua people,” Mr McJannett says.
“The PHOs Pahiatua and Dannevirke based staff are also backed up by others in similar roles across the MidCentral region, so if demand is too high in one part of the MidCentral we can also shift staff around to work where they are most needed,” said PHO Clinical Director Chiquita Hansen.
“We will continue to have the capacity to service all referrals to PHO based services from the Tararua District for the foreseeable future,” she says.
PHO staff based at the new centres will retain the same contact phone numbers and emails. Clinics previously held at the old Pahiatua PHO Office site will move to the St John site in Pahiatua.
PHO staff based in Pahiatua and Dannevirke can be contacted as usual by their own mobile phone numbers or the PHO free phone 0800 766 255 or the normal landline number which will continue to be answered and transferred to the staff member required.
