Celebrate Castlepoint's Rich Agricultural Heritage
22/02/12 21:57
THIS Sunday 26th February
The rugged and isolated coastal community of Castlepoint will welcome the world to the Wairarapa as part of the festivities celebrating the 2012 World Shearing Championships, being held in Masterton.
On Sunday, February 26th, a series of special events have been planned to celebrate the area’s rich agricultural and maritime history including rare opportunities to drive through the iconic Castlepoint Station, go inside the 99-year-old Castlepoint Lighthouse, and see a bullock team working.
Visitors are encouraged to step back in time and come dressed as they would have done 100 years ago and children are asked to bring their Teddy Bear to learn how to 'pretend shear' them.

PRIVATE PEACEFUL
Scamp Theatre (UK)
Following two hugely successful UK tours and sell-out runs in London’s West End, this riveting adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s award-winning book comes to the Festival.
You’ll probably have seen the new trailer for War Horse: Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of author Michael Morpurgo’s best-selling book. Now, another of Michael’s stories, Private Peaceful, takes us back to the trenches. Forget dusty history books, in this play we vividly relive the drama of WWI through the memories of a brave young soldier - Private ‘Tommo’ Peaceful - over one long and fateful night.
The brilliant Scamp Theatre company (Aesop’s Fables) bring this theatre adaptation to life. Like War Horse, the play explores the loves, losses and adventures of war – and is a riveting production for audiences both young and old.

The Great Carterton Wheelbarrow Race is back on Saturday March the 3rd from 10am. Once again the race promises to thrill old and young alike as competitors hurtle (or amble) around a prepared course in Masson Street, Carterton. Besides the main event there will be numerous adult races, a Decorated Wheelbarrow Parade, kids novelty races and entertainment for the whole family with live music, food and refreshments.
The brainchild of local man Peter King, the races have attracted great support from Wairarapa businesses over the years and this Community event guarantees excitement and fantastic prizes.
This year will also see a return of the prestigious Allflex Pub to Pub Dash from Gladstone to Carterton. The Dash is a 13km wheelbarrow endurance race where teams of two compete, leaving from the Gladstone Inn at 10:30am, finishing outside the Carterton RSA.
